Civic Café Skill-building Workshop: Zines and Art Activism

October 22, 2024
5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
Stix House, 6470 Forsyth Boulevard, Clayton, Missouri 63105 (United States)

On Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., the Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement will host a Civic Skill Building Workshop: Zines and Art Activism.

About the topic:

Have you ever looked at your ballot and thought, “What do I need to know about these candidates? What are all these propositions about?” You’re not alone! Many people feel overwhelmed by the voting process and trying to understand the various decisions on the ballot.

Join the Gephardt Institute and Brown School Library for an informative workshop where we’ll break down the essentials of researching your ballot and creating a voting plan. Our speakers will be Cheryl Holland (Education, Political Science, and Sociology Subject Librarian), Sam Lindgren (Biology and Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology (PNP) Subject Librarian), and Melissa Vetter (Director of the Brown School Library). We’ll also explore the role of zines in democracy. Zines are DIY publications that have long been a way that marginalized communities have disseminated information, shared their stories, and organized. Zines are more than creative projects, they’re powerful tools for civic engagement that make information accessible and engaging. During this workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to start making your own voter plan zine to take with you as a civic engagement tool to help others navigate the voting process.
