Gephardt Stories & Voices on Service

Dr. Charles & Mrs. Shirley Brown

“As alumni and parents it is natural to want to continue our involvement with the University. We’re excited to help connect current students with the greater St. Louis community.”

The Browns have exemplified a life of service throughout their entire careers. Mrs. Brown, who has worked many years for the St. Louis Public Schools, is passionate about improving the lives of youth. She collaborates with the Community Service Office to bring Each One Teach One tutors and Service First volunteers to the public schools. Dr. Brown is superintendent of the Wellston School District. He welcomes undergraduate student volunteers, who help Wellston teens explore the possibilities of college.

The Browns are proud parents of two Ervin Scholars at Washington University and alumni. Both continue their connection with the University by serving on the Libraries’ National Council.
