Taller Leñateros: Convening the Community through Books
Taller Leñateros is a publishing collective operated by contemporary Mayan artists in Chiapas, Mexico. Funding brought Mexican artist Javier Silverio Balderas Castillo to St. Louis to make books with Washington University students, lead a demo at The Pulitzer & connect with the community at the St. Louis Small Press Expo. The Leñateros’ rescue of old and endangered techniques such as the extraction of dyes from wild plants, contributes to the conservation of Native American languages and benefits the ecology by recycling agricultural and industrial wastes, transforming them into art and beautiful books.
