Artist Statement

This 6 by 6 in. sculpture depicts a fish in a glimmering blue dress stroking the head of a red bird on the floor of an otherworldly ocean. I wanted to capture the small but monumental moment of motherly love through the two figures representing my mother and myself. My mother and I laugh at the same jokes and never fail to complete each other’s sentences, but we have different colored auras. I see a tranquil, generous, and benevolent blue of a fish queen around my mother while view myself as an avid, arduous, and passionate red of a phoenix-penguin. I invite the audience into this personal cosmology and urge them to think about their little moments with their mothers.
