WHEN: Wednesday, Feb. 19, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.
WHERE: Zoom (NEW as of 2/17; Register for Link)
HOSTED BY: WashU Promoting Science Policy, Education, and Research (ProSPER) (@wustlprosper)
The goal of this event is to provide a background for aspiring Principal Investigators (e.g., students, postdocs, early-career faculty) on how the federal budget affects research funding among agencies (e.g., NIH, NASA, NSF) that fund WashU research, how it changes as new legislators and executive administrations come and go, and how researchers can advocate for science funding that affects them.
We are pleased to host a panel of three WashU faculty who will share their experience in securing and working under Federal research grants:
- Professor Jay Turner, James McKelvey Professor of Engineering Education, Department of Energy, Environmental, and Chemical Engineering, McKelvey School of Engineering
- Professor Brad Jolliff, Scott Rudolph Professor of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences, Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences, WashU School of Arts & Sciences
The event will begin with a brief introduction on the federal budget cycle, followed by an introduction of each panelist, and an open Q&A. The event will be moderated by Abhay Vidwans, ProSPER Director of Science Policy & Advocacy.
What is Civic Action Week?
From Feb. 17-23, 2025, Civic Action Week will highlight civic engagement opportunities throughout Washington University. All week across campus, different student groups, faculty, staff, and community partners will host events and other opportunities to engage. A special thanks to our sponsor, the Women’s Society of Washington University, for their financial support of this endeavor.
