Peter G. Sortino Executive Director

Stephanie Kurtzman is the Peter G. Sortino Executive Director of the Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement. She began her career at Washington University in 1998 as Coordinator for Women’s Programs and Community Service in the Office of Student Activities, and was founding Director of the university’s Community Service Office.

Following the Gephardt Institute’s 2005 launch, Stephanie was appointed Associate Director of the institute in 2006 and continued to serve as Director of the Community Service Office. When the Community Service Office and Gephardt Institute for Public Service integrated in 2015 to form the comprehensive, university-wide Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement, Stephanie co-led the integration and management of the institute. She was installed as the Peter G. Sortino Executive Director in 2017.

Stephanie earned her Master of Education in Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration from The University of Vermont. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Occidental College, graduating Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa. A California native with roots in South Lake Tahoe and Santa Barbara, she and her family are proud to call St. Louis home.
