Film Positives
Artist in The Little Things Art Exhibition
Artist Statement
Thursday, February 3, 2022 – “Film Positives” is an allusion to film negatives, the photography term for photos taken on rolls of film in which lighter areas appear darker, and vice versa – hence “negative”. The photos associated with this work are not shot on black and white film but instead imitate its visual character, capturing the essence of positive indulgence shared across the three photos. Leftmost is a person taking a selfie from a reflection given off by a glass art piece. Center are two people looking out from Brookings Hall with the slight silhouette of a building in the distance. Lastly, a group building a snowman in front of the DUC. The monochromatic color profile appeals to the timeless nature of indulgence with hints of nostalgia and a sweet melancholy. Compositionally minimal, the photos capture moments of simple indulgence – the little things in life. The photos are a reminder of what it looks like to indulge in the simple joys, a remembrance of our own indulgences, and a rejection of sentiments that prohibit us from enjoying the little things that keep us going.
